According to Orange, the iPhone 5, successor of the iPhone 4S, will sport NFC (Near Field Communication), which will allow users to enjoy features such as contactless payments using the phone.

Speaking at a press lunch in Paris, executive VP of group marketing and innovation, Jean-Paul Cottet, said, “There is a question about Apple [adopting NFC for the iPhone 5]. I think, seen from Apple['s perspective], the market is not yet enough mature.”

Cottet adds, “All our SIM cards are now NFC-enabled. We decided to put that on all post-pay SIMs, not for pre-pay — but 90 per cent of the business is post-paid in France… We are betting on the future.”

Many handsets by rival manufacturers have created NFC-enabled phones. Orange has launched NFC-enabled SIMs. Since everyone else is getting into NFC, maybe Apple is getting into it as well.
